Introduction
SM TM introduces youth ages 8-12 and ages 13 - 18 to the experiences and accomplishments uniquely associated with the film and television industries.  |
Fun and useful exploration of moviemaking will give a young person a good feel, and a real look, at the movie business from acting to production.
Upon leaving the camp, the "camper" will know that they want to continue their pursuit of their movie interest as a possible career or or hobby, or they will learn that moviemaking is not for them.
This camp is not a "fluff" course designed to make parents "ooo" and "aahhh", rather,

The camp is also not a "child warehousing facility". We want to be upfront with all parents that will challenge and expand the vista of those children and youth wishing to generally experience the filmmaking process (or as close as one can come to it).

The participants (or "Indies" as we call them. "Indies" is the industry term for independent filmmakers) will get the abundant sense of accomplishment that only filmmaking can bring. They will create their own short subject movie. We do not write it for them and we do not shoot it for them. We do edit it for them, but based on their production notes.
instructors will help them by teaching them the basics, showing them structure and format restrictions, all with giving them involved encouragement. We equip them with the tools, knowledge and creative environment needed to produce a production, but they make their own movie.Ages 8-12 go into a focused acting workshop with some production training in overview for the first two and a half days. Then this group is inergrated into the older groups'the short feature and commercials.

For the older group , the first couple of days is teaching about filmmaking production along with acting. The rest of the time is spent actually making the video short. By the final Sunday (Graduation Day), the Indies' video is editedand all the Indies enjoy activities and guest speakers. Late Sunday afternoon the videos are finished and the graduation ceremony begins along with screening of the Indies' videos.
This 6-day camp is an intense learning and fun experience is open to those who love the movies or would like to gauge their interest in REAL moviemaking.
The Indies themselves will leave the camp with a video short that they created!

And not only will participants learn useable skills during the camp, but they will also learn vital teamwork discipline and camaraderie, all accomplished in a creatively nurturing environment.

What Happens & Ages

8-12 Years Old
Campers (or "Indies" as we call them) in this age group (the "child" age) will learn mainly acting with some general production being covered.
Child participants will be in a short video subject created by the older "young" or "youth" group (described below) and each child participant will receive a copy of the finished production.
13-18 Years Old.
Campers (or "Indies" as we call them) will learn both production and acting, with course focus determined by individual interest and aptitude.

Eric Jewell- Production
Eric Jewell has been involved in film and video almost all his life. Starting as teenager with Super 8 films, Eric has become one of the most sought after HD and Film producer/directors. With his most recent indie film work, "SHTICKMEN" on Blockbuster Video shelves.

Greg Mansur- Production
Greg Mansur is a professor Texas Christian University in the College of Communications's Department of Radio, Television and Film. He earned his MFA from TCU, and an undergraduate degreee in Film and Media Studies from Rhode Island College. His credits since 2004 include director of Adrift, Imperfection, Reilly and Date.CON. He was the cinematographer on the documentary Rockwell Kent, which has been shown at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, and the Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth. In the past five years Greg has been the recipient of the five Telly Awards, Four AFCD Ady Awards and two ITVA gold awards.

Nancy Chartier- Acting/Talent
Nancy Chartier has been acting for 29 years and has been an acting coach with R.E.A.C.T. for 11 years. Among her students are Jake McDorman- 'Raymond' from "Aquamarine", guest starred on 'House', and had 22 episodes of series regular on 'The Quintuplets, Rheagan Wallace who has guest starred on' E.R'.,' N.Y.P.D.Blue', 'Malcom in the Middle', many times, was a young Meryl Streep in 'Adaptation', (before it got edited for time) Jennifer Stone guest starred in 'House','Without a Trace', supported in 'Second Hand Lions' , and Cherami Leigh who recently shot with Richard Linklater and co starred in 'Fast Food Nation' with too many stars to name, and consequently shot Ethan Hawkes' directorial debut. Nancy is also part of a nine person production company, Random Order Entertainment, born only a year and a half ago, which recently won the Video Association of Dallas' '24 Hour Video Race' and has two feature films in development. She is represented by the Campbell Agency as an actor.

Joyce Spizer Foy-Writing- Writing and Development and Executive Producer

Joyce had a career for 37 years as a private investigator in 11 states including placeLos Angeles, California. Following this, she become an author, being mentored by such notables as Ray Bradbury, Rod Thorp, James Frey, and Charles Schultz. She has written 10 books, with 8 of them in print with most of her works being non-fiction, including the IRWIN 2000 award winner “Power Marketing Your Novel.” Joyce has a PhD in Marketing and belongs to Women in Film and the Dallas Screenwriters Association. In 2000, Congresswoman Mary Bono gave her a Woman of Distinction award. Joyce has recently been asked to write a script for a television show in production and has a science fiction script being considered by a major placeHollywood director through Mark McDermitt at Echo Entertainment.

Donatelle is a professional make up artist that has worked with the likes of Dr. Wayne Dyer, Michael Johnson, Randy White, Troy Aikman Emmitt Smith, ,Iman, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Denzel Washington, Charlton Heston, BB King, Jimmy Smits and many more. What's the Orientation?
The Sunday before the first day of the camp there will be a small orientation.
It will take place from 3 PM until 4:30 PM at the TWL Productions Studio.

Your child will receive their special "Camp Gear Pack" that includes a T-shirt and a look at their workshop book (over 100 pages of fun film info!) and meet the instructors in the camp and the main staff.
Also be sure to bring a photocopy of the driver's license of all those authorized to pick up your child from the camp. If we don't know who is picking up your child by sight , we most likely won't let your child leave with that person.

What Do I Do On Day 1?
Just show up at the camp's host sponsor site and drop-off your child to a counselor (parent/guardian signature sheet signing required with photo I D for safety reasons).

How Does The Camp Operate?
Children are divided into age and Production Groups and the older youth age group is divided up by particular interest (acting/ production, etc.). Both age groups, ages 8-12 and ages 13-18 are mixed in age as a film set would be, and overseen by adult instructors and camp counselors.
THE MOVIE INSTITUTE seminars strive to be helpful to, and interested in, the individual and their growth. The first part of the first day is an orientation day during which we learn about each child and their individual needs, and how to integrate them into the group/team structure.

Parental Visits & Rules
Parents are always welcome at the camp. We do ask that parents not spend extended periods of time with their child during classes and workshops, because this tends to detract from the learning/creative experience and team building process for the participants.
There are camp guidelines designed to assist participants in learning the teamwork oriented nature of filmmaking and to keep the focus on creating a fun project.
Again, this is NOT a fluff course or a child warehousing facility.
We do not stick a camcorder in a kid's hand and say “go to it”.
Children joining us in Kamp Hollywood will learn about how to really make a movie and how to have fun doing it. They will gain a since of accomplishment and will know whether or not they wish to continue learning more about the art and business of filmmaking!

Keith Randal Duncan is a 29 year veteran of film, video, theater and the amusement industries. Keith has numerous commercial and corporate film and video credits that include Santa Fe Railroad, Minyard Foods, Southwestern Christian College, Sally Beauty Supply, the Bass Family and feature film credits that include the independent films “The Dark Dealer”, “Repligator” and “Ramming Speed” (1997's USA Film Festival “must see” from The Met Newspaper) and the 2006 Lions Gate release and Deep Ellum Audience Favorite Award Winner "After Sundown".

So What Goes On At 
First of all, please note that this camp is not a fluff course. Most time the younger age groups (10-12) are focused mainly on talent (acting), and the older participants are often focused in production and acting. This, of course, is a guideline and when aptitude for production is evident in a younger participant it is not ignored.
We use digital Mini-DV cameras and Mole & Arri lighting. Camps are at TWL Studios and it is taught by industry veterans.

At Kamp Hollywood an Indie (what we call campers; "Indie" is the industry term for "Independent Filmmaker") is assigned to a moviemaking group with other camp "Indies" and the group chooses its positions, creates its short subject and shoots it with our guidance and final approval. We edit the short for the Graduation Day screening.
The approximate schedule:
The first 2 days (Monday & Tuesday) of the camp are instructional for both acting and production.
Here at The MOVIE INSTITUTE we teach an integrated program of production and acting-so participants learn both! Learning principles of acting helps make for a better production people and an actor learning production makes for better and more effective actors- just ask Ron Howard or John Landis.
The next 3 days (Wed. - Friday) are “idea construction”, pre-pro and production on the video short.
Saturday is editing the short(s) with their respective directors and for everyone else there are cool labs all day.
The last day, Sunday, is Graduation Day. Parents and Youth Age Indies (campers) arrive at 2:30 PM. where parents and Indies (campers) are invited to participate in talks by industry guests, film commission reps, producers, talent agent round tables and production company representatives.
At about 4:00 PM the Graduation Gala begins. There are munchies and drinks, and then the screenings of the camp video is begun. After this all camp Indies are given a certificate of completion and then awards are given out. “Goodbyes” are exchanged and the camp ends. Of course the exact times and order may change.
Now, again, this camp is NOT a child warehousing facility, nor is it just for “little kids”. In fact some of our past Indies have gone on to film school. One alumnus, Eric Zimmerman, actually used the camp video short he helped to create with a letter of recommendation from us to secure his entry into the USC Film School! Other alumni, such as Crissy Gililland, has just graduated from SMU studying film and will soon start her entertainment law education (she is also our Camp Director this year) and Alum Andrew Disney is at NYU Film School.
We are SERIOUS about moviemaking here and very serious about having FUN. A participant will learn one of 3 things at Kamp Hollywood:
a). Whether they are movie watchers and not makers,
b). Whether they are hobbyists,
c). A small percentage will come away knowing they are destined to be filmmakers and professional actors.
All will also experience such important life skills as learning team work, building of self confidence through accomplishment, focus improvement and tenacity.
